A driving instructor can work anywhere, anytime

Financial freedom comes with qualification as an ADI. Each year, about 1.6m Britons take a driving test. Pass rates tend to be around 46% to 47%. So that's around 750,000 happy pupils, and around 850,000 who will have to retake their test.

No wonder pupils queue up to learn with instructors who have a better-than-average pass rate. If you're a good driving instructor with pupils who sing your praises, you'll have a full appointment book.

Work for yourself or with a school
Whether you work for yourself or with a driving school depends on your personality. Some instructors can't wait to take control of their own destiny. Others prefer to have some structure built into their working life.

There is a halfway house in the form of a franchise with one of the big-name driving schools. You'll still be your own boss, but you have to work to standards imposed by your franchisor.

Work with us if you're good enough
Unlike many driving schools, we don't make empty promises or provide spurious guarantees about future work. Many of our well-paid instructors did indeed learn their craft at the Wimbledon Driving School. We snapped them up as soon as they became qualified because we knew they would work to our standards and be a credit to our school.

If you're good enough, we may well make you an offer. But we're not promising anything. You have to prove yourself first.

The truth is, that's how most driving schools work. If you see one that appears to guarantee you work when you qualify, read the small print. Chances are, any paid work as a driving instructor is all at the company's discretion. Once you qualify, you'll be fending for yourself.

Independence and flexibility
For those with the aptitude, being a driving instructor is a great career. The sense of job satisfaction that comes from helping nervous pupils become competent drivers is incredible. The work is flexible too. You can work as much or as little as you like. You can fit lessons around family commitments, and you can take a holiday whenever you like. And you can live where you like. If you want to move to another part of the country, you can take your skills with you.
