Training to become a driving instructor can be expensive – especially if you have to pay for everything upfront. But we don't believe in upfront charges. Our pupils prefer to take things in stages. They pay for instructor tuition in small, 10-hour blocks or even hour-by-hour.
Stage payments are easier on your finances, and more flexible. They give you an opportunity to pull out if your circumstances change. In the long-run, stage payments probably work out cheaper. You don't have to pay for any Part 1 tuition, and you take as much tuition for Parts 2 and 3 as you need. And if you want to fast-track your progress through Parts 2 and 3, you can do that too.
You can cut your costs even further by going for your pink trainee licence after passing Part 2. Once you've got that, you may well be able use the income you earn as a trainee instructor to fund your way through Part 3.
Part 1
All the materials you need for passing Part 1 are available online and in book form. The Driving Standards Agency publishes a recommended reading list.
If you do need additional help, you can book a block of four hour-long, one-to-one sessions with one of our senior instructors.
Parts 2 and 3
Our instructors will guide you through Parts 2 and 3 according to your skills and your needs. All tuition is one-to-one in the car. There are no wasteful classroom sessions with a group of other would-be instructors. Because you have our undivided attention, our practical, high-intensity sessions are much more effective. It's the ideal way to learn if you're in a hurry to qualify.
Pink trainee certificate
When you've passed Part 2, you can apply for a pink trainee certificate. To apply, you must have had at least 40 hours' tuition with an accredited trainer such as Wimbledon Driving School. If you need to build up to 40 hours, our standard Parts 2 and 3 tuition rates apply.
Choose a better qualified instructor
The better the instructor, the better the instructor tuition. So before you book instructor training with any driving school, ask what grade of instructor you'll be getting.
Our chief instructor is a grade 6 ADI. That puts him in the top 1.3% of UK driving instructors (2008 government figures). He's also on the Driving Standards Agency's Ordit register (Official Register of Driver Instructor Training). He runs our instructor tuition course and manages the team of highly graded instructors that we employ to coach the next generation of south London driving instructors.
