Areas to do controls/Moving off & Stopping
It is best to start this subject on a quiet road like Atkins
Road.
Left/Right turns and emerging at T-Junctions
WDS recommend doing a circuit which starts on Emmanuel Road turns left on to Glenfield Road and emerges right on to Burnbury Road. At the end of Burnbury Road we can emerge left on to Radbourne Road and then take the next left on to Midmoor Road. At the end of Midmoor Road we can emerge left on to Haverhill Road and then turn back on to Emmanuel Road. This allows the learner to practice steering, MSPSL and Peep and Creep techniques.
Meeting Traffic
Meeting traffic is a situation where two vehicles are trying
to pass through a space where only one car can pass. In these
situations it is often vital to read the body language of the other
vehicle. This is especially so where there are cars on both sides of
the road and no priority exists. Abbeville Road is perfect to develop
experience and understanding of this difficult topic.
Roundabouts
The roundabout where Atkins Road, Weir Road, Clarence Avenue
and Thornton Road come together; can be used to illustrate priorities,
methods of positioning and the appropriate signals for a given exit.
Pedestrian Crossings and use of Signals
Driving down Balham High Road or Streatham High Road there are
plenty of crossings which can be used to demonstrate the various
different types of crossings and the rules applying to road markings.
Planning issues can also be addressed on these routes.
Areas to do manoeuvres
Reverse around a corner can be practiced at the corner of
Thornton Road and Parkthorne Road. Another nice corner to use is the
corner of Radbourne Road and Hydethorpe Road. The turn in the road
exercise can be done down Radbourne Road. Parallel parking can be done
in Copthorne Road.

‘I really wanted to pass my driving test, I needed the independence, but I have always been nervous. The Wimbledon Driving School instructor put me at ease immediately. Fully trained by the AA, he was calm and patient and that helped me not to panic, even at the beginning when everything seems so tricky. Passing the test has really helped my self confidence’.
