It is very important that a quiet street be used when getting to know the controls of the car and learning the basics of moving off and stopping. A suitable road in Southfields is Sispara Gardens.

Turning left, right and emerging at T-Junctions
Wimbledon Driving School suggests the circuit outlined below for gaining confidence in turning right and left, as well as emerging at T-Junctions:

The circuit starts on Melrose Road. The student should drive to the end of the road and then emerge right onto West Hill Road. The second left should then be taken which will take the student on to Wimbledon Park Road. At this point, emerge left on to Merton Road and then take the second left that comes up which leads onto Lebanon Gardens.

Continue driving along this road as it leads around to the left and emerge right back on to Merton Road. From here the student should take the first possible right which leads back to Wimbledon Park Road. Emerge right once more on to West Hill Road and take the second left onto Viewfield Road. Taking the second left again will bring the student back to the start on Melrose Road.

Following this route will allow the student to practice some important aspects of driving such as steering, peep and creep techniques and MSPSL in a calm and relaxed environment.

Meeting Traffic
Meeting traffic is when two cars need to pass one another, but there is only space for one to do so. Clonmore Street demonstrates a perfect example this.
 
Crossroads
There are good crossroads for practice found where Augustus Road, Replingham Road and Wimbledon Park Road meet. Students can gain practice and understanding of priorities and observation needed at crossroads here. They can also practice right-to-right turning at these crossroads.
 
Roundabouts
There is a roundabout where Augustus Road and Victoria Drive meet that is suitable for students to practice navigating with correct signaling and appreciation of priorities during the approach. There is a much bigger roundabout at Tibbets Corner if required.  
 
Understanding Signals and Pedestrian Crossings
There is a wide array of pedestrian crossings and other signals that a driver must learn to identify and understand how to negotiate safely. Merton Road in Southfields contains a number of these different crossings. 

Areas for Maneuvers
Quiet roads are necessary when practicing maneuvers as traffic and noise can result in panic and frustration for the novice driver. Melrose Road is quiet enough to practice the turn in the road and parallel parking. For reversing around a corner, try where Viewfield Road and Melrose Road meet.
